WTH is Expressive Art?

Art Therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional relationship (therapist), by people who experience illness, trauma or challenges in living. 

Expressive Arts Therapy is similar to Art Therapy but offers a multi-model approach - often including music, drama and dance, as well as art and writing within a therapy session. 

Now let’s drop the Therapy and focus solely on Expressive Arts. This removes the pressure of me being your therapist and you trying to convince yourself that you do not need therapy. 

DON’T PLAY YOURSELF! We all need therapy. 

Some people believe that their troubles are manageable until they’re not!

Think of the average human being and the accumulation of stress that is causing trauma to our bodies. Now, think of the amount of time we dedicate to recovering from the stress  that has been put onto our bodies.

What about the limited amount of resources that are available for women to heal from the pressures of the world? There needs to be an abundant amount of safe spaces for women to heal, create & express with other women. We'd like REFUGE to be one of those places for you.


Expressive Art gives you the opportunity to freely create something & not have to be a master at the craft. You could share your voice in the noise. Sharing your art is not just meant to give others the opportunity to understand you, it's meant to free you. These are YOUR emotions, and understanding them can get you to a peaceful place. Expressive Art is the art of letting go, of letting out, of releasing your energy, & of all things healing. It's owning the process & taking yourself on this transformative journey even if you don't know how to get there.

Expressive Art liberates the spirit while liberating others.

It’s community.

It’s therapeutic.

It’s art.

It’s creative.

It's understanding that everything does not have an answer, but does have a release.

However that looks for you.

We'd love for you to share & get involved.
